East Asia Outreach, June 2010

What does it mean to give "first fruits"?

My First De
ntal Outreach to Asia - June 2010

  • What are your goals? To help folks children, literally and figuratively
  • No, really. What are you gonna do? Provide restorative, dental hygiene & oral surgery procedures
  • Where in the world? Hunchun, Yanbian Autonomous Prefecture, Jilin Province, China (2 weeks) + NK (1 week)
  • For whom? Students (ages 10-17; physically and mentally handicapped; Korean-Chinese) at Hunchun Special Education School, Hunchun, China
  • When? June 3 - June 25, 2010
  • Why? Deuteronomy 26:9-11. To honor Him with the "first fruits" ... I've completed my dental degree. Before embarking on continued post-grad training, before subsequent private practice, even before I make even $1 as a fully-licensed clinician, I feel that God is opening up opportunities to give my first fruits in a different cause.

This June, I will be embarking on a
3-week mission trip to provide dental services for the residents of Hunchun, China (near the NK-China border). Specifically, I will be working with an organization called CRAM (Christ Reaching Asia Missions), which has been doing amazing work in NE China and NK. Check out their website!

Some of their projects include a Special Education School, a Foreign Language School, a ranch, medical/dental clinics, a kindergarten, a daycare center, a bakery, a soymilk factory, etc. I will be helping mostly with the Hunchun Special Education School and the medical/dental clinic this summer.

For 2 weeks, I will spend time working with the students, residents, and staff at the school; for 1 week, I will be in NK helping out with another dental clinic. This latter part is, obviously, somewhat risky, given the current political climate.

Although I will learn the specifics once I'm on-site, I'm told that the students at the Special Education School can use some good cleaning, drilling, filling, and even extracting, without billing, of course. Many have not seen the dentist in years. In the past, I have served on various dental outreach opportunities to inner city settings in and around NYC, as well as an overseas trip to Honduras. But this time, it's different. I feel that God has opened a unique door this summer, and I'm so incredibly excited!

You may already know that I've had an inherent curiosity for NK and Northeast China for quite some time. Now, I feel that I'm ready to put into practice something I've wanted to do for so long...
  • to use my hands and feet to help bring smiles
  • to utilize my so-severely-limited, and yet practical, clinical skills for folks in need
  • to break a sweat for something that's totally unrelated to my own academic ambitions or future earning potential -- the heartless goals for which I've been trained to aspire for SO long
  • to be inspired, to observe and learn, and to be humbled by His work in a seemingly impoverished and spiritually challenged area of the world
  • to be touched by those who're already serving as long-term missionaries, as well as the locals
If anything you've read so far interests or engages you, would you consider supporting me through prayer? My schedule, just like yours, is so hectic that it's sometimes so difficult to find time to pray and seek God's wisdom. I need your help in prayer.

In terms of finances: thankfully, I've raised over 75% of the necessary funds for this trip. But if you would like to partner with me this summer monetarily, would you please consider a small donation?

Suggested donations are: $10, $20, $50, or $100.
